Yacht Racing: Sport of the Rich and the Brave

When you’re a celebrity, you’re likely to be rich or famous – or both. And some of them become adventurous, too, and take to sailing, mountaineering or car racing.

The 16th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup saw some of the top newsmakers in 44 of the world’s largest and fastest racing yachts competing in the seas off the Costa Smeralda. A a week of winds which made racing all the more technical and demanding for these giants of the sailing world.

George Lindemann Jr’s AdelaGeorge Lindemann Jr’s 180ft schooner Adela, in The Spirit of Tradition class, finished three firsts in five races.

The Spirit of Tradition division is often considered one of the most magnificent with veteran and reproduction yachts Holland’s Annagine and the majestic Adela providing photographers with spectacular images.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is an event initiated by YC Costa Smeralda President the Aga Khan in 1980, and has since then become synonymous with the Sardinian venue of Porto Cervo. A total od 44 forty-four “big” sailing yachts in five divisions (Cruising, Mini Maxi, Racing, Spirit of Tradition and Wally) took part in the racing in the Mediterranean.

Tony Parker to Represent IWC Schaffhausen

Appears like the times are just right for Tony Parker. The point guard of San Antonio Spurs won three NBA championships at the age of 25, is married to one of the loveliest women in Hollywood and is now chosen to be the spokesperdon for one of the top-of-the-line professional watches, IWC Schaffhausen.

Tony Parker to Represent IWC Schaffhausen

“I’m very excited to partner with IWC,” said Parker, the not-so-desperate househusband of Eva Longoria. “I appreciate the design and craftsman ship of their watches. Also as First Ambassador to the Make A Wish Foundation in France, I’ve come to really appreciate the charitable enterprises that companies take on. In this area, IWC stood out — their involvement in social responsibility initiatives such as the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation which helps underprivileged youth around the world really impressed me.”

Great Celebrity Fashion Shades here.

Benoit de Clerck, President of IWC North America noted: “Tony has an exciting career ahead of him and we look forward to watching our partnership grow.”

On the same lines as Parker’s phenomenal rise, IWC has been breaking records in technological development and highly complicated precision watch-making since 1868. As the “engineers of fine watch-making”, the brand solely produces men’s watches. The pieces incorporate intelligent designs in a timelessly classical style.

Assisted Living: Not Just a Celebrity Concern

Gossip columns have been bursting out lately with stories of one celebrity or the other seeking help by retreating to luxurious rehab centers. Maybe some of them will come out fully recovered, but the unspoken truth is that the marble floors, massages and ocean views at these celeb rehabs cost nearly $50,000 a month.

That makes me think about the rest of us, the not-so-glamorus ordinary folks, and especially the senior citizens who are just as much as in need of care as the celebrities, let alone expensive rehab programs. I ponder this issue each time I read about a celebrity in an assisted center, and a little research did uncover a whole range of facilities for senior care.

To zero in on one of the more prominent ones, I’d like to talk about the Gilbert Online Guide, which carries an evaluated database of over 1,440 senior care centers backed by professional reviews and rankings. Since I lived in San Jose five years, I was curious about the facilities in the SF bay area, and I did find useful information on San Francisco assisted living, as well as senior care facilities and services in San Mateo, Marin, Southern Napa and Sonoma counties.

Hilary Swank to Promote Charity Campaign

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank has signed with Pantene to become the new face of ‘Pantene Beautiful Lengths’ Charity.

Hilary SwankThe Pantene drive is aimed at supporting women who’ve lost their hair in the course of treatment for cancer. Hilary will encourage people to grow their hair, cut it off and then donate it to create wigs for women who’ve lost their hair.

And she’s getting personally involved in the campaign in terms of cut her own locks for the cause.

“I have lost multiple family members to cancer and witnessed their struggle first hand,” Hilary said in a statement. “I’ve never heard of anything quite like Pantene Beautiful Lengths, and I’m proud to be asked to promote the goals of such a unique and heartfelt program.”

According to femalefirst.co.uk, a recent study revealed that 58 percent of women consider hair loss to be the most dreaded side effect they face when undergoing chemotherapy.

Pantene has partnered with the Entertainment Industry Foundation to launch the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign which will start early 2008.

Now… isn’t that a noble thing to do? To inspire confidence? At any level?

How many of us choose to sacrifice anything for the sake of a stranger… even for monetary gain? I wouldn’t.

All I’m saying is that there are still some people in the world who do that. Only the ones who are so full of life that they can share it with another.

Do Celebrities Go Bankrupt?

Can you imagine Kim Basinger in any kind of financial difficulty? Perhaps not. How about Mike Tyson and MC Hammer? Guys with a never ending flow of cash? Looks like that huh… but what’s common about these celebrities and countless others is the fact that at one time or the other, they filed for bankruptcy.

How does it happen? For one thing, Kim Basinger bought the town of Braselton, GA for $20 million at the time she was dropped out of ‘Boxing Helena’. The financial ramifications ended up in Basinger having to sell the town and filing for bankruptcy. MC Hammer and his 40-member gang ended up spending his $33 million into near bankruptcy. Mike Tyson’s pet tigers cost him $400,000 a month to maintain… and accounted for the lion’s share (pun unintended) of his humongous debts.

But help is always available, virtually everywhere, every city, including help for accounting in San Diego, or Houston or New York. Keeping track of your legal financial status is crucial, whether you’re a celebrity or an ordinary guy like me.
