Jewelry–especially high-profile jewelry–has evolved over the ages. And the general public has always looked to the celebrities to define fashion. The silent movie era set the trend for heavy metal dangling earrings, but when sound came on, tighter fitting jewelry replaced the noisy ones. Hollywood played a major role in determining what’s fashionable… but nothing much has changed.
A 10–carat marquise diamond ring marked the engagement of Catherine Zeta-Jones to Michael Douglas. Ben Affleck adorned Jennifer Lopez’s finger with a glittering 6–carat pink diamond when he popped the question. Tom Cruise’s 5-carat engagement ring for Katie Holmes also made celebrity news highlights the world over.
Then it comes as no surprise that this year’s Oscar Awards function was also a showcase of fashionable–and inspiring–jewelry. No jewelry lover could have missed Cameron Diaz’s vibrant green earrings (emeralds?), Gwyneth Paltrow’s stacked bracelets, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s classic earrings and wrist bangle or Nicole Kidman’s wide bracelet.
Now, I believe that jewelry that inspires must be created inspired. So I put it on my research agenda to find original and inspiring creations that also offered value for money–I discovered overstock.com.

Overstock.com, that calls itself “Your Online Outlet”, reminded me of Aladdin’s cave of treasures with a glittering array of jewelry creations including rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets.
What really helps here is that you have the option of choosing your piece by the type you need, rather than by category. For example, if you’re looking for wedding jewelry, you can directly go to a page that lists varieties of engagement rings, bridal sets and diamond bands in assorted eye-catching designs.
Similarly, you have the pearl section with mind-bogging creations such as freshwater and cultured pearl earrings to Tahitian pearl rings, necklaces and pendants. Diamond jewelry is probably your best best for birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries, and at overstock.com, you can browse through a number of diamond bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
Then, of course, you can choose from their contemporary gold collection, which includes discount gold jewelry and gold jewelry sets. Choose from white gold, yellow gold, or black hills gold for earrings, rings, necklaces, and more.Looking for casual, everyday jewelry you can wear to spice up your looks for just about any occasion? The site offers Sterling silver jewelry ranging from everyday silver rings and bracelets to silver necklaces and earrings.
Men don’t need to lose heart, either. Men’s Jewelry section has men’s rings, wedding bands, bracelets, cuff links and pendants. The site also has an ‘other jewelry’ section, where you might be pleasantly surprised to see some fine jewelry at discount prices, gemstone jewelry, designer jewelry and elegant jewelry bozes as well as clearane offers.
And then you have a range of mesemerising range of diamond, pearl and and gemstone rings set in white and yellow gold, sterling silver, stainless steel and silver tone. These are rings that will never fail to impress–whether it’s the sparkling diamond ring or posh titanium ring. The gold rings and silver rings can feature your or your loved one’s favorite gemstone or pearl. On the other hand (pun unintended), you might find the eternity band diamond ring just the right gift to celebrate an anniversary.
In the bridal jewelry section, you’ll also find the perfect three-stone diamond ring. What’s more, overstock.com provides you with descriptions of the diamonds’ clarity, color and carats, so when you choose a stone, you buy with confidence. Unique fashion rings and colored diamond rings also form part of the affordable collection. you are getting a great deal on a beautiful stone. All are available in sizes to suit every one, from under 5 to 11+.
Taking care of jewelry and gemstones
Buying a beautiful work of jewelry can be one thing, but to derive everlasting peasure from it, it does take some effort. Some folks complain that their jewelry changes color or becomes pale and void of any lustre. This has nothing to do with the quality of the jewelry– but rather points to the simple fact that it has not been maintained the right way.
What many fail to realize is the fact that jewelry needs constant care and cleaning to keep up its apeal. Daily wear jewelry can be cleaned efficiently by soap and warm water, preferably with a soft brush to clan the intricate parts. Remember that diamonds are the hardest of gemstones, and must be kept separately, while emeralds should not be exposed to extreme heat or to very cold or hot water. Pearls can be cleaned easily, without exposing them to heat.

The media is abuzz with the talk that Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen will be propping up this year’s Super Bowl with Pepsi ads. And that won’t be just because Tom Brady will be playing.
PepsiCo has reportedly signed Brady’s girlfriend Gisele to air a sizzling 60-second spot during half-time of the big game. Gisele’s contract with Pepsi is rumored to be the most lucrative deal of her career. Now, that wouldn’t be surprising, would it, considering the cola company’s payout to Britney Spears was $8 million for a Super Bowl spot.
But then again, the catwalker is a shrewd cat when it comes to money matters–last week, she put up Manhattan penthouse on the market for an asking price of $10.9 million, which is three times what she paid for it five years ago. According to the New York Post, Bundchen has purchased a larger townhouse elsewhere in the Village… does this fall in line with what we read about her desire to become a mom and start a familly?

“Yoga is a metaphor for life. You have to take it really slowly. You can’t rush. You can’t skip to the next position. You find yourself in very humiliating situations, but you can’t judge yourself. You just have to breathe, and let go. It is a workout for your mind, your body and your soul.”–Madonna
This should come as no surprise. Health pundits have over and over again stressed that yoga is adds to the credibility of celebrities while also helping change their image from a yo-yo dieting celebrity to someone who’s responsible enough to spend time on their own health.
And the list of celebs practising yoga is grwowing. ModelSophie Anderton is well-known fan of yoga practices. Other top celebs include Naomi Watts, Ricky Martin , Meg Ryan, Sting and his wife Trudie, Jerry Seinfeld, Jennifer Lopez, Nicolas Cage and Gwyneth Paltrow, to name a few.
Says Meg Ryan: “I started yoga about five years ago. I will say, definitely, it changed my life. It made me calmer. It puts you right in the place of witness — which is great.”
No wonder then that global celebrities Christy Turlington, Russell Simmons, Sting and Donna Karan participated in yoga-inspired events of UN’s Peace Day in LA last month. The 12-hour programme included yoga trance dance, meditation, Kundalini yoga pose, 108 rounds of Surya Namaskar, mandala creation and kirtan.
Yoga journal surveys estimate that about 16 million people practise yoga in the US alone and the market for yoga is worth $3 billion.
Finally, a tip from author and model Christy Turlington: Do yoga regularly and you might just get “the yoga butt.”

I agree, it IS bordering on the bizarre, but facts can be stranger than myth or fiction–a quick survey of Academy Award winners does indicate a high probability of them sporting a tattoo!
So much so that it is estimated that the chances that a celebrity brandishing skin art is significantly higher than the 1-in-8 in ordinary folks. But what’s the thing with tattoos and winning Oscars?
Female Oscar winners Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Helen Mirren, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Jessica Lange, Geena Davis, Marisa Tomei, Whoopi Goldberg and Melannie Griffith are just some of the female lead stars who won the Golden Statue… and they all sported all shapes and hues of tatoo designs.
The tale of the tattoo runs similar with male Oscar winners as well–Robert de Niro, Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Sean Penn, Cuba Godding Jr., and Ben Affleck…
It’s astonishing, but the unspoken truth in Hollywood is that a wide range of the glitterati do believe that a tattoo could be the key to laying their hands on an Oscar!

My research on the Web takes me to strange places, stranger people and across new horizons. It’s like a roller coaster of sorts at my desk–and without having to wear the straps. And every once in a while, I stumble upon blogs that virtually talk about everything under the sun.
Well, almost. Last night was one was of those nights where I chanced upon a blog called “Do You Know?” at blogopediaworld.blogspot.com. It is authored by Malathi Badri, a Math lecturer in Chennai, India, who’s also a prolific blogger, running as many as eight blogs ranging from blog promotions and the laws of the universe to plastic surgery and “art to zen, from zero to infinity.”
The site is aptly named “Do You Know?” I discovered that I didn’t quite know. And didn’t know I didn’t know–Malathi provides interesting perspectives and insights in several of life’s lesser known areas. For one, she talks about Neil and his attitude to life and inner strength, and almost, if not quite, in the same breath goes on to discuss botox and ingots, Lake Tahoe and nanotechnology.
It sure felt refreshing to come out of the ‘plastic world’ of celebrities and read about ‘real life’ for a change!

Grammy Award wiining rap artist Missy Elliot is promoting a new brand of crunchiness with a cutting edge as sharp as her music–like… hmm, Doritos.
To be more precise, Missy Elliot is the new face of Doritos Collisions - a groundbreaking variation on old fashioned Doritos, which places to flavors all mixed up into one bag of crisps. Currently the available Collisions flavours are: Hot Wings & Blue Cheese and Zesty Nacho & Chipotle Ranch.
In the commercial, Elliott (who is currently working on a new album) is seen working on a new mix with a sound engineer in a recording studio. Momentarily stuck on the beat, she munches on new Doritos Collisions chips and, inspired by their intense flavor combination unexpectedly decides to spin in a country beat.
“The idea of Doritos Collisions mixing those great flavours is an original idea - just how I like my music,” said Elliott. “I’m all about new experiences and new sounds.”
The rapper is also hosting an interactive experience at www.snackstrongproductions.com, where visitors can listen to Missy’s musical “collisions” and customize their own tracks using different music effects and recording their own vocals.

Millions visit Los Angeles every year hoping ti see movie stars at work and at play. They take tours of top studios, hang around in the beaches, buy maps to celebrities’ homes, even take rides all day in sightseeing buses with binoculars glued to their eyes.
I’ve been tipped by a sharp Hollywood cookie that the chances of finding a star at any of these most likely ‘hot spots’ is fainter than finding a washed out whale in Wisconsin. According to him, some restaurants figures among the best bets–though not all Hollywood restaurants are owned by stars, many are famous simply because of the celeb clientele who frequent them.
Some, such as Chasen’s and Spago, became Hollywood legends. Others, such as Morton’s, are simply “high-profile” merely because agents, actors, and other show biz players go to be seen and to make deals. Others, such as the Hotel Bel-Air, allure the stars with sheer luxury. The there are some where the stars which the stars visit simply because they like the food–inexpensive places like Nate & Al’s Deli or Patrick’s Roadhouse are considered well-kept secrets.
Then again, your chances of finding a celeb need not be restricted to Hollywood alone. There many exclusive restaurants in La Jolla, San Diego and Santa Monica that are frequented by the stars.
