Communications major University of Indiana student Katie Stam has just won the Miss America title at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada. She will also receive a $50,000 scholarship.

The 22-year-old beauty was instantly recognized as a front runner for the crown when she won the first night’s swimsuit preliminary (known as the Lifestyle and Fitness portion of the competition) walking in sexy high-heels, and winning an additional $1000 scholarship in the process. She was also one of four pageant winners who made it into the Miss America finalist pool of 15 as ‘America’s Choice.’
As Miss America 2009, she will have to embark on a 250,000-mile travel, evangelizing her platform of “Passion for Service” promoting community service. She’s also expected to serve as the official National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network.
First runner up Miss Georgia Chasity Hardman was awarded a $25,000 scholarship while second runner-up Miss Iowa Olivia Myers will receive a $20,000 education scholarship.
