Oscar-nominee Keira Knightley has a new brand image — one where she’s raising awareness about human rights in an Amnesty International public announcement campaign.
Knightley recently posed for the ad, holding a banner reading “Protect The Human” to mark the 60th anniversary of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
“I wanted to be part of this film for Amnesty to help raise awareness of the UDHR and to help them, in a small way, to campaign against the abuses of human rights that are still happening every day,” said the 23-year-old British star. “It seems that ‘human rights’ has become a bit of a loaded term in this country, but if you look at the declaration that countries made 60 years ago, it just sets out a series of basic rules about how people should treat each other. The UDHR is something that everyone should be aware of and be proud of as a statement of our common humanity.”
Knightley thus joins celebrities such as Minnie Driver and Erin O’Connor, who have made short films for Amnesty.
The Atonement star, who has received critical praise for her role as Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, in The Duchess, will be seen in Joshua Stern’s King Lear starring as Cordelia next year.
Meanwhile, Forbes recently claimed Knightley to be the second highest paid actress in Hollywood (behind Cameron Diaz), having allegedly earned $32 million in 2007.
Reality TV star Khloe Kimdarshian probably got tired of basking in big sis Kim’s glory and decided to bare herself — literally.
Khloe, who has now joined the list of celebrities who support PETA by posing nude in their ant-fur campaigns, was apparently shocked when she saw a PETA footage of animal abuse.
“The videos are so graphic but they are so necessary for people to watch,” said the 24-year-old buxom brunette. “I’m so grateful that I did get the opportunity to see them. I had no idea that’s how these animals are treated.”
Khloe said she agreed to pose naked to let the world know know that she’s serious about the fur campaign and that she wanted to chip in for the cause.
Khloe invited her local fans to come out and support her at the live unveiling of Khloe’s ad in Los Angeles:
Former NFL cheerleader Bonnie-Jill Laflin obviously thinks taking off her shirt will help PETA’s new campaign ‘Bank On Your Health, Go Vegetarian’.
At this crucial time of a global economy slowdown, when top-notch executives of international companies are straightening their neckties to try and look decent, Bonnie-Jill Laflin, 32, thinks the focus ought to be on eating vegetarian. Maybe she has a point.
Emmy Award-winning Kristen Johnston has become the latest celebrity to get naked for PETA’s campaigns — this time against horse-drawn carriages in New York City.
The ad, set to debut tomorrow in Central Park and appear on NYC cabs, is aimed at tourists planning to take a carriage ride in Central Park during the holidays. So what prompted Johnston to stand up (or lie down) against horse-drawn carriages?
Well, apparently the Third Rock from the Sun star watched the new movie Blinders, and was moved enough to comment, “I was blown away by the story and how these horses live—or actually, I should say, don’t live.”
“The horses go from this horrible job, where they’re pulling people through the streets of Manhattan all day, to this tiny jail cell in this building that’s like a cramped parking garage,” the 41-year-old celebrity adds. “I’d say to tourists considering coming to New York, there’s so much amazing stuff to do here. But please do something else. Go ice-skating, see a show, go shopping. I hope within the next year that there are no more horse-drawn carriages.”
PETA has been hitting the news for quite some time for showing celebrities in the nude in their campaigns against fur. To me, that does make some kind of sense, but what does getting nude have to do with horse-drawn carriages? The shock element? Or does PETA have a one-track mindset? Looks like we are being brain-washed into thinking that any ad that shows skin must be a PETA ad.
“The Queen of MySpace” Christine Dolce a.k.a. ForBiddeN, who posed for a “Fur Is Dead” poster for PETA last year, is out with a rather provocative, if not outright gory, ad for Peta2.
Dolce, 27, who’s also a clothing designer and actor carries an unusually strong message in her new Peta2 ad: “Every year millions of animals are gassed, electrocuted, trapped, drowned, clubbed and skinned alive for their fur. These kinds of acts should be forbidden, right? We think so.”
“Every fur collar and every piece of fur trim means a world of suffering for animals,” says Dolce, who is also a clothing designer and actor. “There’s nothing sexy or fashionable about killing animals and skinning them–sometimes while they’re still alive.”
If you’re keen, you could be one of five lucky winners to win a ForBiddeN Peta2 poster just by registering at peta2.com.
