Oscar-nominee Keira Knightley has a new brand image — one where she’s raising awareness about human rights in an Amnesty International public announcement campaign.
Knightley recently posed for the ad, holding a banner reading “Protect The Human” to mark the 60th anniversary of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
“I wanted to be part of this film for Amnesty to help raise awareness of the UDHR and to help them, in a small way, to campaign against the abuses of human rights that are still happening every day,” said the 23-year-old British star. “It seems that ‘human rights’ has become a bit of a loaded term in this country, but if you look at the declaration that countries made 60 years ago, it just sets out a series of basic rules about how people should treat each other. The UDHR is something that everyone should be aware of and be proud of as a statement of our common humanity.”
Knightley thus joins celebrities such as Minnie Driver and Erin O’Connor, who have made short films for Amnesty.
The Atonement star, who has received critical praise for her role as Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, in The Duchess, will be seen in Joshua Stern’s King Lear starring as Cordelia next year.
Meanwhile, Forbes recently claimed Knightley to be the second highest paid actress in Hollywood (behind Cameron Diaz), having allegedly earned $32 million in 2007.
