Uma Thurman Sues Lancôme

Hollywood actress Uma Thurman filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit seeking at least $5 million against L’Oreal with allegations that the French cosmetics maker is continuing to use her image to sell its products after the expiry of a contract.

Uma Thurman in a Lancome adThe “Kill Bill” star stated that Lancome Parfums et Beaute & Cie boosted its worldwide sales and enhanced its “prestige, stature and bargaining power” by use of her name and likeness in campaigns after her contract expired. According to the lawsuit, the agreement expired in September 2004 in Europe and in December 2004 for the rest of the world.

“The use of Ms Thurman’s image after her contract expired, however minor, was neither deliberate nor intentional,” said Jennifer James, spokesperson for L’Oréal. The statement also implied that any use of Thurman’s image after the contract had expired was a mistake, not a commercial ploy.

Thurman, 38, is best known for her role as a gangster’s moll in the 1994 film Pulp Fiction.
